STUDIO ▸ 01 is two composers, R.L. and D.O., writing music for picture since 2019. Twelve titles so far: four features, two series, three documentaries and three shorts, around one hundred and forty cues.

We write to the edit. Most of what a score has to do is already decided by the cutting: where a scene turns, how long a shot is held, where the dialogue leaves room. So we ask for the rough cut before writing anything, and we spot the film against it rather than against a script or a treatment.

We score with small groups, usually a string quartet or less, with piano and tape, recorded in our own rooms with the microphones close to the instruments. That is a decision about how the music sits under dialogue. A close, dry recording of four players takes up less of the mix than a sampled orchestra and can be pushed further down without disappearing. It also keeps recording inside a budget a documentary or a first feature can carry.

Delivery is stems and a stereo mix per cue, timecoded to the locked cut, with 5.1 or Atmos splits on request. One of us attends the final mix.
