A film that refuses to tell you when to be frightened.
The first assembly ran two hours forty and had almost no music in it. The director's note was one line: “nothing that comforts.” So the score never resolves. Thirty-one cues, and only one of them lands on a tonic — the last, eleven seconds before the cut to black.
Everything is built from a single four-note cell taken from the sound of the house itself: a radiator pipe in the location, recorded on the scout, pitched down two octaves and used as the tuning reference for the whole quartet. The players had to tune to a building. You can hear them fighting it in the second reel, and we kept that take.

The title sequence is the only cue written before the shoot. It exists as a four-minute piece that the editor cut the images to, rather than the other way around — which is why the ink plate above breathes on the beat.

Spotting notes
Kitchen. No music. The fridge is the cue.
First entry — viola alone, tuned to the pipe. Enters under dialogue, three bars early.
The corridor. Tape only. Quartet muted in the mix but still playing; you feel the bow noise.
Cut the cue we wrote. Silence works. Left 40 seconds of room tone in its place.
Resolution. First and only tonic. Eleven seconds.
